History:

Beaches owners, John & Sally Bush, have long been market leaders in the backpacking industry since their journey began in 1982. A downturn in the domestic tourism market caused John and Sally to make a bold move and convert their Motel & Caravan Park into the very first backpacking hostel in Hervey Bay – and one of only a handful Australia-wide.

As their Hervey Bay hostel grew in popularity, John & Sally noticed the increasing desire for guests to visit Fraser Island and explore the area on their own, and so began the first ever Fraser Island Self Drive safaris in Hervey Bay. Shortly after, Beaches famous Base Camp! was developed and guests had the luxury of a designated camp ground, toilets, showers and shelter as part of their Fraser Island adventure.

After 10 good solid years of operation in Hervey Bay, John & Sally wanted to expand their business again. Identifying trends within the backpacking industry and the opportunity for growth in the Whitsundays, they purchased an existing motel in Airlie Beach and refurbished the property as a hostel. The new hostel boasted additional features never seen before such as ensuite bathrooms, air-conditioning, TV’s and fridges in every room, setting a new standard for backpacking in Australia and giving guests exceptional quality and value for their money!

But it didn’t stop there! In June 2008, John and Sally opened their first designated Travel agency in Brisbane. Since then, they have been hard at work rolling out even more stores offering quality touring product to international travellers 7 days a week and making hundreds of people happy daily.
